Cold weather charging and lithium battery care

I have a 2017 MX.
It occurs to me that I should have a better baseline knowledge of battery care.
Is it true that our battery packs should not be charged at cold temps?
Should we "wake the battery up" before riding hard in cold weather?
Should I avoid riding entirely in cold weather?
I am defining "cold" as below freezing.

Perhaps this information is not at all applicable to our Alta battery packs?

My MX does awful sounding things in the cold weather. By "cold" I mean in the mid teens F. It's been fine at temps above 30 or so....
